Profs James Calleja

Professor James Calleja has been involved in Vocational Education and Training since 2001. Before his appointment as Principal and CEO of the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology in June 2018, Mr Calleja was Director of the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop) from 2013 to May 2018. Before joining Cedefop, he served as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Employment in his native Malta from 2011 to 2013. Professor Calleja is also the President of the European Forum for Vocational Education and Training (EfVET) a Europe-wide organisation representing VET training providers. Since 2016, he serves as Council Member on the Hong Kong Council for the Accreditation of Vocational and Academic Qualifications (HKCAVAQ).

In 2005 he was entrusted with the setting up of the Malta Qualifications Council where he served as Chief Executive up to December 2010. He is an Associate Professor and served as Council member of the University of Malta.

Prof Calleja is a graduate of the Universities of Malta, Padua (Italy) and Bradford (UK) from where he obtained his PhD in International Relations. Since 2001, he has been an accredited commercial mediator with CEDR (London).

In 2001, he was appointed Administrative Director of the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology and in 2004 he moved to the European Training Foundation in Turin. He started his working life at the Foundation for International Studies at the University of Malta (1986-1995) followed by other upward career moves to the United Nations International Institute on Ageing (1995-1998) and to the Ministry of Economic Services Malta (1998-2001). He represented Malta on the European Qualifications Framework Advisory Group, on CEDEFOP’s Governing Board and on the Bologna Follow-Up Group.

A prolific writer, Prof Calleja has published books and articles and has edited various publications. He is the co-author of the Malta Referencing Report of the Malta Qualifications Framework to the EQF and EHEA. He has participated in international events in many countries in Europe, North America, South-East Asia, Australia, Canada, Africa, South Africa, the Middle East, and in the Mediterranean region.

Mr. Anthony Saliba

Born on 20 June 1958, Anthony Saliba received his Primary Education at St Monica’s College in Birkirkara. He completed his secondary education at the Minor Seminary, in Floriana. At age 18, he joined the Major Seminary where he graduated with honours in 1981 as a Bachelor in Sacred Theology at the University of Malta and the Faculty of Theology at tal-Virtu’. In 1982, Anthony started his career in education as a teacher of Religion and Italian at Stella Maris College, Gzira, while occupying the role of Master of Discipline and Senior School Coordinator for Pastoral Care for six years. He then moved to the former Upper Lyceum Gan Frangisk Abela as Head of Philosophy for six years, until he joined St Edward’s College Sixth Form as a teacher of Systems of Knowledge and Philosophy. During his ten-year stay at St Edward’s, Anthony occupied the roles of Head of Middle School, Coordinator of Sixth Form, until he was appointed Headmaster of St Edward’s College from 2002 till 2007. During these years, he was a member of the UK’s Headmasters & Headmistresses Conference.

On 16 July 2007, Anthony joined MCAST as its first Deputy Principal. Apart from other duties, he is currently in charge of the Grievance Office. During his thirty-eight years in education, Anthony completed his Advanced Diploma in Education with the University of London, his Teacher Training Certificate, and obtained his Master’s degree in Educational Management with the University of Aberdeen.

His hobbies include football, choral and classical music, travelling and studying languages. Anthony is presently studying with the Biblical Institute of Jerusalem to complete his Certificate in Biblical Linguistics.

Eng. Jesmond Zammit

Eng. Jesmond Zammit graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Malta in 1993. He started his career as an equipment engineer with a multinational semiconductor manufacturing and testing company and was responsible for new equipment design, buy off and commissioning. In 1999 he took over production and operations management of the QFP and BGA testing and finishing department within the same multinational.

In 2007, after 14 years working in the manufacturing sector, Jesmond joined a building technologies company, as a chief operating officer, offering fire, safety, security and HVAC services to high-end, mixed-use residential and commercial developments.

Since 2016, Jesmond took up the role of Head of Capital Projects office at MCAST, tasked with the design, execution, commissioning and handover of the college campus masterplan.

In his spare time, Jesmond likes to travel and explore new cultures, take long walks and to read. He also enjoys cooking and food-wine pairing.

Mr Mario Pace
Data Protection Officer | 数据保护官

Mr Mario Pace joined MCAST in September 2001 as an assistant lecturer at the ICT Institute. In 2002 he was appointed as Deputy Director within the same Institute and then as Acting Director in 2010. In 2013 he was asked to set up the Data and Information Management Department and was appointed as its Director in 2015. In 2019 he was appointed as MCAST’s first Data Protection Officer.

Mario is a fellow of the Institute of Accountants (MIA) and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He is also the holder of the CPA warrant.

Perit Deborah Borg
Director – EU Projects | 欧盟事务主管

Deborah Borg is a graduate of the University of Malta, obtaining a Bachelor of Engineering and Architecture (Hons) degree in 1995 and a Master of Arts in Baroque Studies in 2002. She was awarded the warrant to practice as a perit (architect and civil engineer) in 1996.

Perit Borg started her professional career at the Malta Planning Authority, specifically within the transport section. She was subsequently appointed as the Deputy Resident Engineer during the construction of the Malta Freeport Terminal II. Ms Borg eventually joined the Coastal Management Company Limited where she was mostly involved in the design of educational infrastructure.

In 2004, she joined the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) where she was responsible for the construction of a number of buildings for the College and was actively involved in the development of the MCAST Masterplan in Corradino. Eventually she was entrusted with the setting up the MCAST’s EU Projects Office. In her capacity as EU Project Director, she was instrumental in securing in excess of 100 million Euros in EU funding primarily ERDF and ESF funds for MCAST.

Deborah’s main interests include reading, travelling, art and architecture.

Ms Jacqueline Grima

Ms Jacqueline Grima worked as a secretary for a German company manufacturing glasses for fifteen years. She continued to study, while working, and successfully completed a Diploma in Human Resources, despite also having to care for a child. In 2011, together with her family, Jacqueline relocated to Brussels where she embarked on a new working experience at a European institution as an assistant for translation. This was a very enriching experience for Jacqueline as she worked with people from different countries and cultures. While in Brussels, Jacqueline furthered her studies through various language courses. Today, Jacqueline is the personal assistant to the MCAST principal.
